‘Krim mjedisor’: Anije që hidhte mbeturina u ndalua në Suedi
A Swedish patrol first spotted the ship near the island of Fårö, off Sweden’s southeastern coast, during an aerial patrol a few days ago.
According to Swedish news outlet Göteborg Posten, one of the ship’s crew members was caught “red-handed” by coast guards while dumping waste into the sea.
The ship was allowed to continue its journey as planned to the port of Gothenburg, where it was boarded by Swedish coast guards early Thursday morning.
The crew member confessed to illegally disposing of waste and was fined 50 times his daily wages, local media reported. Fines in Sweden are proportional to an offender’s income.
Coast Guard press officer Mattias Lindholm told the Göteborg Posten that while he does not have precise details about the discarded material, it is believed to be “household waste”.
“You may think it’s insignificant to throw trash overboard, but it’s illegal. The sea should be free of trash” said Lindholm.
Sweden’s defense minister, Carl-Oskar Bohlin also commented on the incident in a post on X.
“It is a clear example of how the Coast Guard actively conducts maritime surveillance to combat environmental crimes,” he wrote.
